『說文解字』 上諱字 ‘秀’의 표제항에 대한 논의와 재해석 = Discussion and Reinterpretation of the Entry for Character 秀 in the Shuowen Jiezi

The purpose of this paper is to redefine the entry for the character 秀in Shuowen Jiezi (說文解字), which is marked with only two characters 上諱(name of a deceased king), as 上諱字(character used for the name of a deceased king), and propose a supplemental entry for it that conforms to the editorial system of Shuowen Jiezi.
The discussion consists of two parts: first, by examining the Han-dynasty institution of name taboo or pihui(避諱) system, it clarifies the sociopolitical background that led to the omission of certain characters, such as 秀, from the dictionary’s head characters corresponding to imperial names during the Eastern Han. It further analyzes the usage of 秀 within other character entries to reveal its semantic and character-form systems applied in Shuowen Jiezi. Second, drawing on textual attestations of 秀 and principles of character formation, semantic interpretation, and character-form analysis, the paper evaluates the validity of the supplemented entry derived from the annotations in the Da Xu ben (大徐本), Xiao Xu ben (小徐本), and Duan zhu ben (段注本) editions from the aspects of semantic interpretation and character form analysis.
On this basis, the paper proposes a new entry for 秀 that complies to the editorial principles of Shuowen Jiezi.
