Huineng's teaching of the "thirty-six pairs of opposites" is a doctrinal system designed to guide practitioners to detach from the extremes of existence and non-existence and to embody the wisdom of the Middle Way based on Self-nature. Baekpa Geungseon reinterpreted this doctrine through his unique theoretical framework, which includes the "Three Statements," "Qi-yong (Capacity and Function)," and "True Emptiness and Marvelous Existence." This study analyzed how Baekpa structurally integrated Huineng's teachings into his own Seon thought. The analysis revealed that Baekpa correlated the operational method of the thirty-six pairs—specifically the "blocking of both extremes" and their "appearance and disappearance"—with the expedient means of the "New Perfumed Three Statements" (also referred to as Marvelous Existence or Qi-yong). Furthermore, he connected the realization of "Self-nature," the ultimate source of these pairs, directly to the enlightened state of the "Original One Statement" (or True Emptiness).
Through this reinterpretation, Baekpa defined the theory of the thirty-six pairs not merely as a list of opposites, but as the "First Statement Patriarchal Seon," which integrates expedient means with ultimate truth. By organically linking these two previously distinct concepts, this research verified the internal consistency of Baekpa's Seon thought and illuminated the creative process of its inheritance and deepening.
