This study explores how generative artificial intelligence (AI) support designers’ cognitive processes from a ‘Design with AI’ perspective. To this end, we developed a questioning strategy grounded in designers’ recurring cognitive units and proposed a visualization-based interface that addresses the limitations of linear text-based interaction. The prototype was designed to help users reflect on and structure their thought processes, and the questioning strategy was refined through scenario-based simulations grounded in the Double Diamond process. Eight participants engaged in an ideation task using the prototype and completed the Creativity Support Index (CSI) survey and in-depth interviews. The analysis indicates that the combination of question-driven intervention and visual structuring facilitates cognitive immersion and helps organize complex ideas more systematically. These findings suggest the potential for generative AI to function as a partner in cognitive construction and highlight the need for adaptive, user-state-responsive AI support in future design tools.
