Organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) has emerged as one of the most rapidly growing and important topics in the field of organizational research. In the context of police organizations, the significance of OCB has also been increasingly recognized, leading to a growing body of related research. Given the critical role of leadership in handling various incidents and crises in police work, this study aimed to examine the relationship between transformational leadership and OCB. Furthermore, this study empirically investigated the mediating effect of public service motivation (PSM), a key psychological factor for police officers, on the relationship between transformational leadership and OCB.
To achieve these research objectives, a survey was conducted in March 2024 among police officers affiliated with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, and a total of 166 valid responses were used for analysis.
The results revealed, first, that transformational leadership had a significant direct effect on OCB among police officers. Second, transformational leadership was also found to indirectly enhance OCB by promoting public service motivation. These findings suggest that fostering transformational leadership within police organizations plays a crucial role not only in enhancing public service motivation but also in encouraging OCB. This study contributes to the academic understanding of leadership and motivation in police organizations and provides practical implications for organizational development and management within law enforcement agencies.
