비금초등학교 부설 ‘제염기술원양성소’의 치폐와 그 의미 = Affiliated with the Bigeum Elementary School in Shinan-kun

국문 초록 (Abstract)

전라남도 신안군 비금초등학교에 부설로 ‘비금 제염 기술원 양성소’가 1951년에 설립되었다. 양성소에는 초등학교 졸업 이상의 학력과 염부(鹽夫) 경력을 지닌 30명 이상의 20대 초반의 청년이 입소하여, 약 5개월 동안 염전과 제염에 관한 이론과 실습을 공부하였다. 그들은 수료 후 천일염전 기술자로서, 자기 염전을 경영하거나 신안군은 물론이고 전남ㆍ전북ㆍ충남 지역에까지 진출하여 염전을 축조하였다. 양성소는 제1기생만 배출한 채 1952년에 폐지되고 말았다. ‘비금 제염 기술원 양성소’는 이렇게 단기간 존속하였지만, 해방 이후 부족한 소금 생산에 기여하였을 뿐만 아니라 비금도를 전국 제일의 천일염 생산지로 자리매김하는 데에도 일정한 역할을 하였다.

The “Bigeum Training School for Salt Production Technicians” was founded in 1951 as a school affiliated with the Bigeum Elementary School in Shinan-kun, Jeollanam Province. The training school admitted more than 30 young people in their early twenties who had graduated from elementary school or a higher educational institution and had a career as a salt worker. They studied the theory and practice of salt fields and production for approximately five months. After completing the program, they managed or established their own salt fields even in Jeonnam, Jeonbuk, and Chungnam regions, as well as Shinan-kun, as solar salt field technicians. The training school was closed down in 1952 after producing only the first graduates. Even though the “Bigeum Training School for Salt Production Technicians” lasted only for a short period of time, it not only contributed to the production of salt in short supply after Korea’s liberation, but also played a certain role in the establishment of Bigeum Island as the nation’s No. 1 solar salt production area.
