조선 전기 철화분청자의 소비 양상과 지역성 = Consumption Patterns and Regional Characteristics of Punch'ŏng Ware Painted with Underglaze Iron-brown in the Early Chosŏn Period

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글의 목적은 조선 전기 철화분청자의 구체적인 소비 양상을 파악하여, 그 성격을 유기적으로 고찰하는 데있다. 현재까지 축적된 발굴성과를 바탕으로 철화분청자의 소비 양상을 파악한 결과, 철화분청자는 충청도를중심으로 생산 및 소비된 지역성을 지닌 자기이며, 궁궐ㆍ관청ㆍ사찰 등 다양한 공간에서 사용되었으나 민간에서 주로 소비되어 민수품의 성격이 강한 것으로 판단된다. 이 중 철화분청자의 지역성은 철화분청자의 가장 도드라지는 특징이라 할 수 있는데, 철화분청자의 지역성이 형성된 배경에는 관요 성립이라는 시대적 요인과 수도권과 인접하여 교통 및 유통의 중심지로 기능한 조선 전기 충청도의 지역적 특징이 있다. 향후 동시기 제작된 문양이 장식된 자기와의 비교 등 추가적인 연구가 이루어진다면, 조선 전기 자기 생산 체계 속에서 철화분청자가 차지하는 위상을 보다 명확하게 규명할 수 있을 것이라 기대한다.

The purpose of this study is to identify the specific patterns of consumption of punch'ŏng ware painted with underglaze iron-brown in the early Chosŏn period and to examine its characteristics within an integrated analytical framework. Based on accumulated archaeological excavation data, this study finds that punch'ŏng ware painted with underglaze iron-brown was produced and consumed primarily in the Ch'ungch'ŏng region, demonstrating a clear regional specificity. Although such wares were used across a range of settings— including royal palaces, government offices, and Buddhist temples—they were predominantly consumed in private contexts, indicating their strong character as utilitarian ceramics. Among the defining features of punch'ŏng ware painted with underglaze iron-brown, its regionality stands out most prominently. The formation of this regional specificity can be attributed to both historical and geographical factors: the establishment of the official kiln system (kwanyo) during the early Chosŏn period, and the strategic position of Ch'ungch'ŏng Province as a transportation and distribution hub due to its proximity to the capital. These conditions facilitated both production and circulation within the region. Further comparative research, particularly with contemporaneous decorated ceramic wares, is expected to clarify more precisely the position of punch'ŏng ware painted with underglaze iron-brown within the ceramic production system of early Chosŏn Korea.
