Shin Wi’s (申緯, 1769–1847) flower poems reveal a distinctly pictorial sensibility. Many of his works were inspired by painting—especially illustrated manuals (hwabo 畫譜)—and some, in turn, prompted new pictorial production. This study examines the affinities between Shin’s poetry and encyclopedic learning by foregrounding the idea that the relationship between his verse and encyclopedic knowledge parallels the relationship between painting and encyclopedic knowledge. Particular attention is given to Qunfang pu (羣芳譜), a Ming–Qing florilegium/flower encyclopedia that circulated widely in late Chosŏn. The study shows that this text served as a shared resource in both Shin Wi’s poems and the painting inscriptions (jehwa 題畫) written by his son Shin Myeong-yeon (申命衍, 1809–1886), and uses this overlap to trace how encyclopedic information and pictorial imagination interact within Shin’s flower poetry.
The article also identifies two salient features of Shin’s corpus—his marked predilection for autumn blossoms and his frequent use of poetic sequences—and argues that these poems often assume the formal logic of art objects such as painting manuals and albums (hwacheop 畫帖). On this basis, it proposes that Shin’s flower poems may be read as a kind of poetic “album of flowers” (hwaecheop 花卉帖). Shin’s compositional process begins with encyclopedic knowledge and proceeds through meticulous observation and description; through this process, external objects penetrate the poet’s interiority and are transformed into vivid and original meanings. In doing so, Shin Wi’s flower poems illuminate an artistic epistemology in which knowledge and cognition, outward perception and inward reflection, are integrated into a single trajectory of insight.
