This study develops and evaluates a stepwise hybrid education program that integrates gamification, virtual reality (VR), and high-fidelity simulation to enhance medication error prevention and safety competence in nursing students. The research method was based on the ADDIE model and consisted of three progressive modules—Basic ('escape room' game), Intermediate (virtual reality and error detection), and Advanced (high-fidelity simulation)—which were designed to enhance medication safety competence. The program’s reliability was confirmed through expert validation. A pilot program using a single-group pre- and post-test design was conducted with 21 nursing students. Results showed a statistically significant improvement in medication knowledge (p<.001), along with high levels of learning engagement (4.58 points) and program satisfaction (6.78 points). Although medication-related nursing performance and self-efficacy did not show statistically significantly improvement, qualitative feedback indicated that the safe virtual environment and immediate debriefing effectively enhanced learning motivation and heightened awareness of the importance of clinical judgment. This study provides evidence that hybrid simulation is an effective pedagogical strategy for bridging the gap between theory and practice, though longitudinal research is recommended to facilitate practical competency development.
