The primary customers for small SUV(Sports Utility Vehicle) in Korea are young professionals, typically in their mid-twenties to early thirties, who are beginning their economic activities. This study aims to analyze and integrate the characteristics of Gen Z and apply them to the interior design of small SUVs.
The purpose of this research is to experimentally identify the functional and aesthetic design characteristics favored by Gen Z. Subsequently, these derived Gen Z characteristics are integrated to establish a design direction, based on which a preliminary interior design proposal for the next-generation small SUV is presented.
The research methodology involved four steps: First, we analyzed the current status of small SUV interiors in the domestic market and reviewed precedent product design research targeting Gen Z.
Second, Gen Z characteristics were investigated through a FGI(Focus Group Interview), subjective preference evaluation, and Think-aloud protocols.
Third, the resulting characteristics were synthesized to establish functional and aesthetic design concepts for the small SUV interior. Fourth, the final interior design was completed through idea sketching and an expert review process.
The research findings are as follows: First, Gen Z desires to consume diverse experiences. Second, a mobile platform concept was proposed that allows Gen Z to enjoy specific brand experiences within the interior space of the vehicle. Third, Gen Z showed a preference for aesthetic designs characterized by continuous curves and restrained modernity. Fourth, the final design was conveyed through 3D rendering images, and a physical verification was completed via the production of a 1:4 scale mock-up. Finally, a visualized brand experience scenario for Gen Z was presented.
