Purpose This study aims to compare and elucidate the distribution and time-series changes of major research topics in Taekwondo by applying year-weighted Dynamic Topic Modeling (DTM) to domestic and international publications from 2002 to 2025.
Method The dataset consisted of 4,989 studies, including 2,998 KCI-indexed domestic articles and 1,991 international articles indexed in SCIE, SSCI, and Scopus. After text preprocessing, including stopword removal and synonym consolidation, a vocabulary of 2,000 terms was constructed. Temporal imbalance was corrected using exponential-decay year weighting (decay rate λ = 0.5, w = exp(−0.5 × (Yref − y))) combined with oversampling to reflect the influence of recent research. The optimal number of topics was determined using the c_v coherence score, yielding six topics for international research and seven topics for domestic research.
Results International studies increasingly emphasized kicking training methods (rho = .460) and technical training program design (rho = .306), while research on kinematics and biomechanics declined (rho = –.308). Domestic studies mainly focused on dojang education, psychology and performance, instructor leadership, and youth training. Recent trends show growth in global dojang education (rho = .419) and psychological performance topics (rho = .330), whereas physiology-based health promotion (rho = –.404) and youth program effects (rho = –.415) have decreased.
Conclusion While international research has concentrated on accumulating scientific evidence and applications for “sport Taekwondo,” domestic research has highlighted the sociocultural value of Taekwondo as “martial art and education.” These differences reflect Taekwondo’s multilayered identity, suggesting that future scholarship should aim to integrate international and domestic research streams into a complementary academic foundation.
