김훈의 『공터에서』에 나타난 가족서사 = A family-narrative in In the vacant lot written by Kim Hoon

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 김훈(金薰)의 『공터에서』에 드러난 가족서사의 양상과 그 문학적 가치를 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 『공터에서』는 자전적 소설로, 저자를 비롯한 가족의 생애가 투영되어 있다. 소설에 등장하는 일가족은 저자의 가족과 상당한 유사성을 보인다. 일제강점기, 한국전쟁기, 군부독재, 산업화 시대 등 굴곡 가득한 한국근현대사의 흐름 안에 주인공 가족이 존재하는데, 가족 구성원 중에서도 특히 아버지의 삶과 운명에 초점이 맞추어져 가족서사가 진행된다.
이 글에서는 『공터에서』의 구체적인 장면들을 저자 김훈의 산문들과 비교하면서 김훈과 가족의 생애가 소설에서 어떻게 구현되고 있는지를 살펴보았다. 가족서사의 중심이 되는 소설 속 아버지의 서사와 저자의 아버지, 김광주(金光洲)의 실제 행적을 좇아가며 소설에 나타난 가족서사의 양상을 톺아보고자 하였다. 김광주는 상해에서 독립운동에 몸담았던 아나키스트였고, 소설, 연극, 언론 등 다양한 분야에서 적극적으로 활동하였던 소설가이자 언론인이었다. 그러나 혼란하고 혼탁한 정세, 부패한 권력, 억압받는 창작의 자유 등을 까닭으로 김광주는 거점 없는 부유(浮游)하는 삶을 살다 생을 마감한다. 아들 김훈은 아버지의 고단하고 남루한 생애를 바라보면서 부친의 운명이 자신에게 대물림되지 않기를 소망한다. 아버지로부터 내려오는 운명의 굴레를 자신과 분리하기 위하여 분투하였다. 하지만, 그것은 쉽지 않은 일임을 인정하고 순응해야만 하였다. 그래서 김훈은 자신과 아버지의 운명을 가족서사 소설에 드러내어 그 하중을 덜어내고자 하였다. 요컨대 『공터에서』는 김훈의 자기 고백과 반추의 과정이 가족서사에 담겨 문학적으로 승화된 작품이라는 가치를 도출해 낼 수 있다.

This article attempted to examine the concept and characteristics of autobiographical novels, self-narrative, and family-narrative, and to consider the aspects of family- narrative and the literary value in Kim Hoon's novel, In the vacant lot. In the vacant lot is an autobiographical novel that reflects the life of the family, including the author. The family in the novel shows considerable similarities to the author's family. The main character's family exists in the flow of modern and contemporary Korean history, which is full of twists and turns, such as the Japanese colonial period, the Korean War period, the military dictatorship, and the industrial era. And the family-narrative of In the vacant lot focuses on the life and fate of the father, among the family members.
This study examines how the life of Kim Hoon’s family is embodied in the novel by comparing with the specific scenes of In the vacant lot and the essays of the author. Following the narrative of the father in the novel, which is the center of the family-narrative, and the author's father, Kim Kwang-joo's history, this article tried to look back on the aspects of the family-narrative in the novel. Kim Kwang-joo was an anarchist who worked in the independence movement in Shanghai, and was a novelist and journalist who actively engaged in various fields such as novels, plays, and the media. However, Kim Kwang-joo ends his life after living a wandering life without a base due to the chaotic situation, corrupting power and suppressed freedom of creation. Looking at Kim Kwang-joo's life, Kim Hoon hopes that his father's fate will not be passed on to him. Kim Hoon struggled to separate himself from the bond of fate that was rolling from his father. Nevertheless, he had to admit that it was not an easy task and comply with his fate. Therefore, Kim Hoon tried to relieve the weight of fate by revealing the fate of himself and his father, in family-narrative novel. In short, In the vacant lot has the literary value that Kim Hoon's process of self-confession and rumination is sublimated in a family-narrative.
