Background/Objectives: This study aims to understand the utilization status and expression forms of China's intangible cultural heritage by focusing on collection cases at China International Fashion Week and to explore the possibility of fusion between modern fashion design and intangible cultural heritage.
Methods: This study selected works that used intangible cultural heritage elements in the China International Fashion Week from 2023 to 2025 as the analysis objects, and analyzed them through frequency analysis and combined with hybridity theory.
Results: The main results of this study are as follows. First, we confirmed that there were a total of 56 major intangible cultural heritage items used in China International Fashion Week from 2023 to 2025, and systematically classified them. In addition, we confirmed the specific application status of each classification through frequency analysis. Second, based on the theoretical framework of hybridity, seven forms of intangible cultural heritage expression in fashion design were derived.
Conclusion/Implications: The study found that traditional techniques and traditional art types appear more frequently in fashion design than other types. On the whole, intangible cultural heritage items related to ethnic minorities are more integrated into the overall fashion design, showing a variety of uses. In addition, the seven forms of expression were as follows: Digitization and technological application of intangible cultural heritage, the combination of intangible cultural heritage and sustainable fashion concepts, the refinement and recreation of visual elements of intangible cultural heritage, the fusion of intangible cultural heritage and modern costume structures, the combination of intangible cultural heritage and modern patterns, the modern reconstruction of traditional intangible cultural heritage costume forms, and the fusion of various intangible cultural heritage.
