This study empirically examines the visual–symbolic transformation in North Korean postage stamps, identifying the shift in identity discourse from a nation–centered to a state–centered framework.
Departing from existing research that largely focuses on speeches and textual documents, this study explores how stamps —an everyday and repeatedly circulated propaganda medium —encode mechanisms of memory politics, ideological reconstruction, and state identity formation in North Korea. The analytical framework is structured around a three axis model —discursive direction, symbolic system, and exogenous factors —derived from Lasswell’s four components of propaganda: political purpose, symbolic structure, repetition, and audience orientation.
A qualitative content analysis of stamps issued under Kim Il–sung, Kim Jong–il, and Kim Jong–un shows that Kim Il–sung’s period visualized a unification–oriented nationalist narrative centered on “one nation, one fatherland,” while Kim Jong–il emphasized self–reliance, peaceful unification, and great national unity to maintain and expand ethnic identity. Under Kim Jong–un, particularly after the breakdown of the 2019 Hanoi summit, symbols of “nation” and “unification” rapidly diminished, replaced by state– and security–oriented narratives such as nuclear force, strategic weaponry, and “state–first” ideology. These changes visually indicate North Korea’s reframing of inter–Korean relations from a shared ethnic community to two mutually hostile states.
The findings demonstrate that stamps function as an early indicator of discursive and identity shifts, often preceding changes in policy documents. By analyzing stamps as a visual medium, this study reinterprets the weakening of national discourse and the rise of state centered narratives within broader structural and strategic contexts, offering a new analytical lens for understanding North Korean propaganda and identity politics on the Korean Peninsula.
