다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract) kakao i 다국어 번역

This study examines the relationship between two key figures who saved the nation during the Imjin War (1592-1598): Ryu Seong-ryong (柳成龍, 1542-1607) and Yi Sun-sin (李舜臣, 1545- 1598). Focusing on Yi’s reverence for Ryu and Ryu’s exceptional promotion and defense of Yi, the paper explores how their mutual trust and loyalty transcended political factions and regional ties to shape one of the most remarkable partnerships in Korean history. Unlike previous studies that mainly approached their relationship through political or military perspectives, this research highlights their personal bond and moral solidarity.
First, Yi Sun-sin’s respect and admiration for Ryu Seong-ryong are analyzed through Nanjung Ilgi (War Diary) and The Complete Works of Admiral Yi Sun-sin. Yi's poetry reveals his patriotic determination and profound reverence for Ryu, while his dream encounters with Ryu depict their shared anxiety over the nation’s fate during wartime. This spiritual connection represents a deep trust rooted in the Confucian virtue of loyalty (忠).
Second, Ryu Seong-ryong’s role in supporting Yi is explored through The Collected Works of Seoae and Jingbirok. Despite political opposition and royal suspicion, Ryu recommended Yi for command through irregular promotion (bulchatakyong, 不次擢用) and consistently defended him before the king and ministers. After Yi’s death, Ryu expressed profound grief in his poem Lament for Commander Yi (哀李統制) and, before his own death, instructed his descendants not to erect his tombstone unless Yi's memorial stone was raised―an ultimate testament to his lifelong loyalty and friendship.
This study concludes that their relationship transcended mere political collaboration, embodying a spiritual alliance founded upon patriotism and moral friendship (udo, 友道). By re-examining their mutual respect and devotion, this paper seeks to reaffirm the enduring values of loyalty, righteousness, and friendship in an age of division and digital alienation, emphasizing their continuing relevance to modern Korean society.
