This study analyzed the effects of cognitive-behavioral art therapy on the stress and marital satisfaction of middle-aged women over a total of 20 sessions, twice a week, from September 3 to December 10, 2018. The results are as follows. First, the therapy explored the causes and consequences of the unconscious reactive attitudes of the participants throughout their lives, fostering awareness of obsessive thoughts and thus positively impacting stress relief. Second, the participant experienced a shift in the family atmosphere, shifting from passive marital communication to responsive behavioral expressions toward her husband, leading to improved marital satisfaction.
Third, qualitative analysis of each session revealed that the participant experienced cognitive restructuring and integration of her marital life, recognizing her husband’s strengths despite taking them for granted due to obsessive thoughts and anxiety.
Furthermore, changes in her attitude toward her husband’s needs led to improved marital communication. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral art therapy in improving stress and marital satisfaction in middle-aged women and provides valuable empirical data for counseling practice.
