This study confirmed that multiple word class education is not being properly implemented in Korean language education, and based on this, a new teaching method of multiple word class in Korean language education was sought.
The educational shortcomings regarding multiple word class in Korean language education are confirmed through textbook analysis and surveys. First, as a result of analyzing Korean language textbooks, no multiple word class were found in the grammar section. Through this, it was discovered that multiple word class are absent from the educational content in current Korean language textbooks. Next, a survey was conducted targeting foreign Korean language learners with TOPIK level 5 or higher, and the results showed that they were not properly aware of multiple word class. This confirms that multiple word class education is not being properly implemented in Korean language education, and concludes that a new teaching method is needed.
Accordingly, this study proposed a step-by-step teaching model of ‘grammar presentation → grammar practice → grammar use’. To put it simply, in the ‘grammar presentation’ stage, the word class characteristics are taught according to the word class classification, and it is learned that word class characteristics can be duplicated in a single word. In the ‘grammar practice’ stage, students learn to identify multiple word class directly through dictionary search activities. In the ‘grammar use’ stage, students write various sentences using multiple word class in conjunction with writing education. It was expected that the above step-by-step teaching model would provide an opportunity for Korean language learners to acquire knowledge of multiple word class more easily.
