Bulgulsa Temple, located on the southeastern slope of Mt. Palgong, was founded during the Silla(新羅) Dynasty and has undergone several reconstructions over a millennium. Unlike typical temples aligned along a central axis, Bulgulsa’s Yaksa Hall(藥師殿) and Medicine Buddha statue(藥師如來⽴像) deviate from the main line(主脈), showing a unique spatial arrangement shaped more by terrain than Buddhist symbolism. The main hall(主佛典), Shrine of Sakyamuni Buddha's Sarira(寂滅寶宮), stands in a valley misaligned with the main mountain vein, suggesting that early construction did not fully reflect feng shui principles. Although the rear hill (玄武) forms an auspicious shape, the absence of an entering dragon vein(入⾸⿓) and the water flow follows a leftward (右旋水) course, while the topographic formations of the Blue Dragon(靑⿓) and White Tiger(白⻁) are weakly developed. Its front hill(案山) corresponds to the White Tiger’s end. Despite this, Bulgulsa offers a suitable environment for meditative practice. Later reconstructions incorporated feng shui corrections(裨補): the Hall of the Medicine Buddha(藥師寶殿) was reoriented toward the favorable water flow (得水) while maintaining harmony with the entire temple complex. This study establishes a new framework for interpreting Buddhist temple layouts through feng shui analysis.
