This paper examines the multivalent symbolism of the horse across history, myth, and depth psychology, centering on an 11-year-old girl’s two-year Sandplay process. In therapy, “Pony” moved from placing an ordinary horse to invoking a winged Pegasus and, finally, a unicorn- Pegasus hybrid-an evolution that mirrors her psychological maturation and spiritual unfolding. Drawing on historical texts, mythic narratives, and Jungian theory, we interpret the horse as a sacred being, liminal mediator between conscious and unconscious realms, energetic principle (yin–yang), maternal presence, intuitive guide, and catalyst for the integration of opposites. The case demonstrates how equine imagery can advance psychic development and underscores the continuing vitality of ancient symbols in contemporary healing practice.
