This study empirically investigates the financial consumption behavior of older adults and the heterogeneity within this group using financial big data. Based on ten key indicators—including loans, credit card use, cash advances, delinquencies, debt guarantees, and insurance—we compare the financial activities of older adults with those of other age groups and examine variations across subgroups within the elderly population. The results show that, overall, older adults engage in lower levels of financial activity and display a more conservative financial orientation.
Within this group, five distinct latent classes are identified, distinguished by different combinations of consumption intensity and insurance coverage. Importantly, some classes demonstrate active consumption despite critically insufficient insurance protection, pointing to structurally vulnerable segments. These findings reveal that polarization and structural imbalance coexist in the financial behaviors of older adults and emphasize the need for tailored financial policies that address not only chronological age but also the interaction between consumption and insurance patterns.
