This study aims to examine the core issues of Toegye Lee Hwang and Gobong Kye Daeseung's arguments on the four-seven debate and the ethical implications inherent therein. To this end, this study summarized the core issues of Toegye and Gobong's arguments and examined the ethical issues that arise from these differences.
The decisive difference between Toegye and Gobong lies in whether the two ways of describing the relationship between li(理) and ki(氣) can be understood as a consistent system when applied to the relationship between the Four Beginnings and the Seven Emotions.
This difference involves two points: first, the understanding of the relationship between li and ki. Toegye's perspective, which distinguishes between the four beginnings and the seven emotions as li-ji-bal(理之發) and ki-ji-bal(氣之發), affirms the li-ki-bul-sang-ri(理氣不相離) perspective on the reality of existence, but emphasizes the li-ki-bul-sang-jap(理氣不相雜) perspective on the relationship between li and ki, which are the constituent principles of existence. In contrast, Gobong adheres only to the li-ki-bul-sang-ri perspective and recognizes only the perspective of the coexistence and intermingling of li and ki. This point raises questions about existence and value inherent in the Neo-Confucian system of thought.
The second point is in the criteria for distinguishing between good and evil in the expression of emotions. According to Toegye, human emotions can be classified as either li-based or ki-based, depending on whether the cause of the emotion is considered to be oneself or something other than oneself (external stimuli). The understanding of one's own emotions as li-bal or ki-bal reveals the difference between emotions as “recognition of the universal origin[li] inherent in individuality[ki]” and emotions as “simply the expression of individual self-emotions, regardless of individuality [ki] and universality[li].” The reason why the emotion of reason is important in Toegye's philosophy is that the universality[理] confirmed through it can become a common ethical standard that transcends time and place. In contrast, in Gobong's philosophy, the criteria for judging good and evil are moderation(中: appropriateness) and propriety(節: appropriateness). Since both the four beginnings and the seven emotions are judged solely by moderation and appropriateness, the distinction between the four beginnings and the seven emotions becomes meaningless, and furthermore, the distinction between rational and emotional becomes diluted, ultimately reducing or obscuring the meaning of reason and causing it to lose its universal ethical standards and attributes. It seems that Toegye consistently argued for the distinction between li and ki in response to Gobong's repeated assertions, considering these issues.
The debate between Toegye and Gobong on the four-seven debate demonstrated a detailed and profound philosophical discussion, as it involved issues of existence and value in the context of the relationship between li and ki, and issues of ethical judgment in the context of the emergence of the four-seven debate.
