The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among coaching competency of sports instructors, the metacognition and training attitude of student-athletes. To achieve this aim, data were collected from a total of 217 athletes registered with the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee in 2025 using a convenience sampling method. After excluding incomplete responses, data from 205 participants were used for the final analysis. Statistical analyses, including frequency analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, and structural equation modeling, were conducted using SPSS 22 and AMOS 22. The results revealed the following: First, the coaching competency of sports instructors had a significant effect on student-athletes’ metacognition. Second, coaching competency also influenced the training attitude of student-athletes. Third, metacognition was found to have a significant effect on training attitude. These findings suggest that coaching competency plays a crucial role in enhancing the metacognitive abilities of student-athletes. Furthermore, both coaching competency and metacognition act as key antecedents to improving training attitude, which is closely associated with athletic performance.
