Purpose – As the proportion of single-person households has been growing dramatically in Republic of Korea recently, the patterns and culture of leisure in the society has been changing dynamically. MZ generation, born between 1980 and 1995, and ages mainly between twenties and thirties, considered “being alone” natural and efficient. In this vein, the objective of this research was to explore the leisure alone among MZ generation single-person households’ to provide basis for leisure products and policies.
Design, data, and methodology – To achieve the purpose of this research, qualitative research methodology was utilized. Semi-structured interview was conducted with 15 participants (1) who was in MZ generation(born 1980-1995), (2) living alone in Seoul, Busan and Daegu at the time of the study. Collected data was analyzed with constant comparison method.
Result – The findings of this research showed that all the participants used physical exercise as their main leisure activity, and tried to expand their leisure activities and social interaction through physical exercise. Also, they used leisure alone as their main tool for relaxation and enhancing their life satisfaction.
Conclusions – The results offered insights into the perceptions and changing culture of leisure alone among MZ single-person households in Republic of Korea.
