This study aims to explore the direction for developing an integrated Korean reading and writing textbook to enhance the written communicative competence of Vietnamese university students majoring in Korean. To achieve this goal, previous research on integrated reading and writing education, which has proven effective in improving written communication skills, was first reviewed. Subsequently, the current status of reading and writing courses and textbook usage at Vietnamese universities was investigated. In-depth interviews were then conducted with instructors at universities that adopted frequently used textbooks to analyze the needs in the local context.
The survey results collected from 38 universities in Vietnam revealed that although reading and writing courses were offered in an integrated format, general textbooks were more commonly used than textbooks specifically designed for integrated reading and writing. These findings confirmed both the need and the justification for developing an integrated reading and writing textbook suitable for Korean language education in Vietnam. Based on this, a needs analysis was conducted with instructors responsible for these courses. Drawing on the results, the study proposes six directions for textbook development that reflect the specific characteristics of the Vietnamese educational environment.
This study holds significance as a preliminary study suggesting directions for developing an integrated Korean reading and writing textbook for Korean majors at Vietnamese universities. It is expected to serve as a foundational resource for future textbook development.
