This study aimed to understand the structural and contextual situations of university counseling centers. To achieve this goal, the study explored the in-depth experiences of counseling professionals who perform various roles within university counseling centers. The participants were seven counseling professionals currently working at counseling centers in four-year universities located in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. Data were collected through individual in-depth interviews and analyzed using Giorgi’s(2009) phenomenological research method. The situational structure analysis yielded four components, nine subcomponents and 23 meaning units. The participants described adapting to university organizational culture and elevating the status of counseling centers, while also facing structural constraints such as low awareness of counseling, job insecurity, and excessive work-related stress. Despite these challenges, they demonstrated their leadership and professional expertise through center-wide operations and counselor management. Through this, they reaffirmed the meaning of the existence as a university counselor and continuously reflected on their experiences within university system. This study is significant in that it specifically explores the distinctive characteristics of university counseling, as well as the roles and perceptions of university counselors, through the examination of the actual work experiences of leaders in university counseling centers. Lastly, implications and limitations for policy development, and the suggestions for future research were presented.
