This study analyzes young adult novels that represent real-life issues faced by adolescent girls, such as pregnancy and childbirth, family dissolution and running away, and body image concerns and dieting. It examines the growth of girls who overcome the shock and fear of pregnancy, choose their own lives through childbirth, and seek family after family breakdown or running away, as well as their rejection of dieting shaped by the male gaze. Furthermore, the study explores how girls’ self-reflection and growth are connected to adolescent readers’ identity formation. Through this analysis, the study clarifies the social and educational significance of young adult literature education that focuses on girls’ growth and identity formation, re-examines the social and educational value of young adult novels that portray girls’ growth and identity, and seeks directions for young adult literature education that promotes healthy identity formation regarding issues such as pregnancy and childbirth, family dissolution and running away, and body image concerns and dieting.
