This study investigated the determinants of colic-response competence among 47 frontline workers in the Korean horse industry under a rapidly subtropicalising climate. Prior research indicates that extreme heat-and-humidity stress destabilises equine heart rate, respiratory rate and gut motility, thereby increasing colic risk. Accordingly, competence was operationalised as (1) correct recognition of normal baseline parameters (heart rate, respiratory rate, rectal temperature) and (2) a ‘call-the-veterinarian immediately’ decision for 11 abnormal clinical signs. Descriptive statistics, χ²/Fisher’s exact tests, multivariate logistic regression, an education × work-experience interaction model, two-level multilevel logistic regression and Ward hierarchical clustering were applied sequentially. Education experience emerged as the strongest independent predictor of both knowledge (OR = 4.52, p = 0.025) and behaviour (OR = 3.75, p = 0.035). The education × experience interaction was significant for respiratory-rate knowledge (OR_int = 1.80, p = 0.042), indicating that longer tenure amplifies training effects. The two-level model revealed regional variance (ICC = 0.123; γ₀₀ = 0.85, p = 0.047), confirming that veterinary-infrastructure accessibility contributes to competence gaps. Cluster analysis showed that high-risk signs (e.g. abdominal distension, haemorrhagic faeces) prompted immediate veterinary contact in 66.1 % of cases, whereas mid-/low-risk signs were underestimated at 18–45 %. The findings highlight the need for climate-adapted, career-stage simulation training, risk-tiered response manuals and region-specific emergency systems—all pivotal strategies for enhancing the resilience of the horse industry in an increasingly subtropical environment.
