This paper aims to investigate the transformation of the discourse on the veneration of antiquity (崇古論) in Joseon by focusing on three seminal Confucian scholars: Toegye (Yi Hwang), Yulgok (Yi I), and Seongho (Yi Ik). By examining their intellectual trajectories, this study elucidates the distinctive features and evolutionary dynamics of their attitudes toward antiquity. Drawing on Professor Huang Chun-chieh's categorization, East Asian Confucian discourses on antiquity can be generally divided into two principal modes: the transcendent veneration of antiquity and the historical veneration of antiquity. This research demonstrates that across more than two centuries—from Toegye and Yulgok to Seongho—there was a noticeable shift in Joseon Confucian thought from the former toward the latter mode.
Toegye revered Jizi (Kija), credited with bringing Confucian moral and ritual cultivation to Joseon. He emphasized the unbroken transmission of Confucian ethical doctrine and lineage of mind-and-heart learning (心學) from the sage-kings Yao and Shun through the Three Dynasties. Compared to Toegye's advocacy of Jizi, Yulgok broadened the scope of antiquity by tracing the Confucian Way back to Fuxi, revealing an incipient consciousness of cultural parity vis-a-vis China. Seongho extended this historical lineage to Dangun and sought to substantiate—using historical and geographic evidence—that the territory granted to Jizi was located in Liaodong. He referenced textual evidence from the Book of Changes, assertions that the sage-king Shun belonged to the Eastern Yi (東夷), the hierarchical classification of the "Nine Yi" peoples, Confucius's alleged descent from the Yin dynasty, and Joseon's traditional preference for white attire. These arguments collectively functioned as a historical demonstration that the Joseon people descended from the Yin dynasty, thus reinforcing the claim that Joseon possessed a cultural tradition that was historically autonomous and comparable to that of China.
In conclusion, this study underscores that during the period surrounding the Ming-Qing dynastic transition, Joseon Confucian intellectual discourse on antiquity gradually shifted from a transcendent paradigm toward a historically grounded one, increasingly emphasizing Joseon 's distinctive cultural heritage and national historical consciousness.
