This study aimed to explore factors hindering the adaptation and social integration of Syrian refugee families settled in Korea by examining their immigration and settlement experiences. Through interviews, observations, and discussions conducted over a period of 1 year and 6 months with Syrian refugee families, their peers, and information providers who assisted their children, the analysis yielded 7 key themes and 16 categories. The study identified both intrinsic and extrinsic factors inhibiting the cohabitation of humanitarian-allowed refugee families and locals. Intrinsic factors include the exclusionary attitudes and prejudices of locals, defensive and dependent attitudes of refugees, and cultural preservation, while extrinsic factors include administrative and institutional barriers such as restrictions on public services and children's employment. Consequently, the study discusses the inadequacy of temporary residency permits and the delegation of responsibilities for cohabitation, suggesting the need for basic support for refugees fulfilling civic duties like tax payment and the establishment of focal and relief agencies for refugees residing in local small-to-medium-sized cities.
