유의 어휘 관계의 ‘대조성’에 대하여 = On 'Contrastiveness' in Synonymy

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 의미적 동일성을 주요 특성으로 하는 유의 관계에 반의 관계의 주요 특성이라고 할 수 있는 ‘대조성’이 나타나는 현상에 주목하고 이를 살핀 것이다. 이러한 특성이 어떤 조건에서 나타나게 되는지, 그러한 특성이 나타남으로써 어떤 의미적 표상이나 기능 등이 발생하는지 등을 살핀다.
논문의 주요 구성은 다음과 같다. 먼저 2장에서는 유의 관계의 주요 특성으로서 ‘동일성’에 대해 살피고 이를 판정할 수 있는 기준으로서 ‘대체 가능성’을 검토한다. 3장에서는 반의 관계의 주요 특성으로 보았던 ‘대조성’이 계열적 어휘 의미 관계 모두에 통합적으로 작용한다고 주장하는 Murphy(2003)의 견해를 살핀다. 이 과정에서 ‘대조성’이 언어 사용의 다양한 층위에서 발생할 수 있는, 기본적 특성이라는 것이 논의된다. 4장에서는 유의 관계에서도 의미적인 차원의 ‘대조성’이 나타날 수 있다는 것을 몇 가지 용례를 통해 살핀다. 유의어들은 일부 의의나 사용역에서 차이를 가지는 것이 일반적이다. 그러나 특정한 맥락과 조건에서는 대립적 특성이 상정될 수 있고 이에 따라 유의어를 통해 대조의 의미를 구성할 수도 있다는 것이다. 5장에서는 유의 관계의 대조성이 유의어가 갖는 본래의 의미를 통해서도 나타날 수 있지만 개별 화자에 의해 새롭게 부여될 수도 있다는 것을 몇 가지 예를 통해 살핀다. 이러한 현상은 유의 관계에 존재하는 의미 차이와 그것에 의한 대조성이 어휘 내적으로 발생할 뿐만 아니라 특정한 화자에 의해서도 개별적으로 발생할 수 있다는 것을 보여주는 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper focuses on and examines the phenomenon of 'contrastiveness', which can be said to be the main characteristic of the antonymy, in the synonymy with 'semantic sameness' as the main characteristic. It examines under what conditions these characteristics appear, and what semantic representations or functions occur as such characteristics appear in synonymy.
The main contents of this paper is as follows. First, in chapter 2, we look at 'semantic sameness' as the main characteristic of the synonymy and examines 'substitution possibility' as a criterion for determining it. In chapter 3, we examines Murphy(2003)'s view that 'contrast' is a general characteristic for semantic relations that includes all relations. In this process, we discuss that 'contrast' is a fundamental characteristic that can act in various aspects of language use. In chapter 4, we look at several examples of how ‘contrast’ at the semantic level can appear even in synonymy. Synonyms can assume opposing characteristics in specific contexts and conditions, and thus the meaning of contrast can be constructed with synonyms. In chapter 5, we examines through several examples that 'contrastiveness' in synonymy can also appear through the natural meaning of the words, but can also be newly given by speakers or writers.
