미국의 인종차별 문제를 다룬 1930년대 한흑구의 단편소설 연구 = A study on Han Heuk-gu's novels that deal with issues of racial discrimination in American society - Focusing on short stories from the 1930’s

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper is an analysis of the novels of the 1930s that dealt with the issue of racial discrimination in the United States. Han's short stories from the 1930s show the existence of a sense of victimhood or inferiority related to racism within Asians living in the United States. The misguided perception of Asians as victims of discrimination against whites and perpetrators of discrimination against blacks is revealed. At that time, racial discrimination in the United States overlapped with class discrimination and overlapped with discrimination against women. For example, Korean high school students do not want to live in poor black neighborhoods, describe hotel employees as "servants," and sexually objectify exotic unmarried black and white women. In addition, Asian immigrant men assume only white women as their marriage partners, but they show the duality of viewing them negatively by saying that an Asian immigrant woman who chose to pass married an American became a "Yankee girl." The confused perceptions and duplicity related to class/race/nationality/gender that emerged from them were also the things of the Han Black District at the time. It is also the case that most of the Korean Americans at the time were confused and wealthy in a time and space so different from their homeland, sometimes as victims, sometimes as perpetrators, within the limitations of the times that they did not realize that the dichotomous cognitive framework of the modern era that was dominated by such indicators was a fallacy.
