태공당 월주 대종사와 지구촌공생회 = Great Master Taegong Wolju and ‘Good Hands’

국문 초록 (Abstract)

지구촌공생회는 태공월주 대종사(太空 月珠, 1935~2021)가 2004년 설립한 불교국제개발협력기관이다. 그는 총무원장 재임 시(1994~1998) 신사회운동인 깨달음의 사회화 운동을 적극적으로 추진했었다. 지구촌공생회는 깨달음의 사회화 운동이 갖는 신사회운동성을 계승한 불교시민사회운동이다.
태공월주 대종사의 국제개발협력활동은 ‘이보현행 오보리(以普賢行 悟菩提)’, ‘귀일심원 요익중생(歸一心源 饒益衆生)’, ‘천지여아동근 만물여아일체(天地與我同根 萬物與我一體)’, ‘연기법(緣起法)과 동체대비(同體大悲)’의 불교사상을 토대로 하고 있다. 그리고 이 사상들은 공생(共生) 사상으로 귀일된다.
지구촌공생회의 주요사업은 우물을 파고 물탱크를 관리하는 ‘식수지원’, 학교와 유치원 그리고 청소년센터 등을 건립하고 운영을 지원하는 ‘교육사업’, 유목민들을 위해 농장을 일구고 유실수를 보급하는 ‘지역개발’, 전 세계 및 국내의 긴급한 상황에 처한 이웃을 돕는 ‘긴급구호’ 등으로 분류할 수 있다. 지구촌공생회는 출범 이후 각 영역에서 지속적으로 수혜의 범위를 확대하고 있다.
지구촌공생회의 발전과제로는 우선 ‘기금 개발과 홍보 강화’를 들 수 있다. 비영리기관의 홍보 강화는 기금 개발과 불가분의 관계에 있다. 지구촌공생회의 홍보비는 여타 대형국제개발협력단체에 비해 현저히 부족하기 때문에 소셜 미디어 홍보의 강화가 현실적이다. 현재 지구촌공생회는 인스타그램과 유튜브보다는 페이스북을 위주로 소셜 미디어 홍보를 하고 있다. 하지만 소셜 미디어 유저(user)들은 페이스북보다는 인스타그램과 유튜브를 선호하는 경향이 크기 때문에 인스타그램과 유튜브 홍보를 강화하는 것이 필요하다.
다음은 ‘경제적 지원과 심리적 치유의 병행’이다. 지구촌공생회의 지원과 자립은 경제적 측면과 더불어 심리적 측면을 병행하는 것이 불교계 국제개발협력기관으로서 필요하다. 인간은 경제적-심리적 두 측면 모두에서 안정될 때 비로소 행복해진다. 종교조직인 지구촌공생회의 국제개발협력 활동은 경제적 자립을 돕는 지원과 더불어 심리적 치유를 위한 지원을 할 때 불교단체로서의 활동 특성을 확보하게 된다.
마지막은 ‘활동교육 강화와 소명의식 제고’다. 지구촌공생회는 태공월주 대종사의 생애와 사상을 선양하고자 공생교육관을 2023년에 설립하였다. 하지만 공생교육관의 교육은 여타 사찰불교대학의 불교교육과 다르지 않다. 이에 공생교육관의 교육과정에 태공월주 대종사의 생애와 사상, 그리고 지구촌공생회의 사명과 활동이 반영되어야 한다. 그리고 회원들이 지구촌공생회의 활동에 소명의식을 가질 수 있도록 교육을 하여야 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

‘Good Hands (Global Community Society)’ is a Buddhist international development cooperation organization established in 2004 by Taegong Wolju (太空月珠, 1935-2021). During his term as executive director of the Reform Order (1994–1998), he actively promoted the socialization movement of the Enlightenment, a new social movement. The Good Hands is a Buddhist civil society movement that inherited the new social movement of Enlightenment socialization.
There are four Buddhist ideas regarding Taegong Wolju's international development cooperation. The first is the ‘enlightenment of Bodhi through the practice of Samantabhadra (以普賢行 悟菩提).’ The second is ‘enlighten the source of the mind to benefit all living beings (歸一心源 饒益衆生).’ The third is ‘the world is one root with me, all beings are one with me (天地與我同根 萬物與我一體).’ The fourth is ‘the law of causality (緣起法) and the great compassion of One-body (同體大悲).’ These four ideas are attributed to the idea of a symbiotic relationship (共生).
The main projects of Good Hands are ‘drinking water support,’ which involves digging wells and managing water tanks, ‘educational projects,’ which support the construction and operation of schools, kindergartens, and youth centers, ‘regional development,’ which cultivates farms and distributes fruit trees for nomads, and ‘emergency relief’ to help neighbors in emergencies domestically and globally. Since its launch, Good Hands has continuously expanded the scope of its benefits to each area.
The first development task for Good Hands was ‘fund development and strengthening publicity.’ Strengthening the publicity of nonprofit organizations is inseparable from fund development. Because the promotional expenses of Good Hands are insufficient compared to those of other large international development cooperation organizations, strengthening social media promotion is necessary.
The next step involves a combination of economic support and psychological healing. The international development cooperation activities of Good Hands, a religious organization, secure the characteristics of their activities as a Buddhist organization when they provide support for psychological healing as well as support for economic independence.
The last step is to strengthen active education and enhance a sense of calling. To this end, the life and thoughts of Great Master Taegong Wolju and the mission and activities of the Good Hands should be reflected in the curriculum of the Symbiotic Relationship Education Center. In addition, education must be provided so that members have a sense of calling during Good Hand activities.
