아우구스티누스의 윤리사상 이해 = A Study on Augustine’s Ethical Ideas

국문 초록 (Abstract)

아우구스티누스의 윤리사상은 그가 살았던 로마시대의 철학적 경향과 종교적 상황 및 신학적 견해에 바탕을 두고 있다. 본고는 아우구스티누스의 윤리사상을 『고백록』, 『신국론』, 『자유의지론』등을 중심으로 논구하고자 한다. 신의 선한 창조와 악의 문제와 관련하여 아우구스티누스는 마니교의 선악이원론을 비판하며, 악은 의지에 속한 문제로 보았고, 선의 결핍으로서의 악을 해명한다. 인간의 타락 및 신의 은총과 관련하여 아우구스티누스는 펠라기우스와의 논쟁을 통해 자유의지의 가능성과 한계를 논구하고, 인간의 도덕적 완성과 구원을 위해 신의 은총이 필수불가결함을 제시한다. 신국 시민을 위한 실천윤리에서 두 국가에 속한 존재로서 인간은 신의 은총을 통해 왜곡된 사랑의 질서나 죄악으로 기울어지는 의지를 회복할 수 있으며, 최고선인 신 안에서 행복과 평화에 이를 수 있음을 주장한다. 끝으로 아우구스티누스의 윤리사상에 대한 비판적 논의 및 현대적 의의에 대해서 다룬다.

Augustine's ethical ideas are rooted in the philosophical trends, religious circumstances, and theological views of the Roman era in which he lived.
This researcher aims to discuss Augustine's ethical ideas, focusing on his works Confessions, The City of God, and On Free Choice of the Will.
Regarding the issues of God's good creation and the problem of evil, Augustine criticized dualism of good and evil, explaining that evil is a problem of will and regards evil as the absence of good. In relation to the corruption of humanity and God's grace, Augustine engaged in a debate with Pelagius to explore the possibilities and limits of free will, asserting that God's grace is indispensable for human moral fulfillment and salvation. Concerning practical ethics for citizens of the divine city, Augustine argued that humans, as beings belonging to both earthly and divine realms, can restore their distorted will, inclined towards the disorder of love and sin, through the grace of God. He claimed that within God, who is the highest good, humans can attain happiness and peace. Lastly, this paper delves into a critical examination of Augustine's ethical philosophy and its contemporary significance.
