조주종심(趙州從諗)의 선사상(禪思想) 특질과 그 의의 = The Characteristics of Chan Thought of Zhaozhou and Its Significance

Zhaozhou cong shen(趙州從諗) inherited The Sixth Patriarch of the Nan zong chan(南宗禪), Hui neng(惠能) and later acted during the transitional period when the chán sect, the Five Houses of Zushi chan(祖師禪) occurred. Zhaozhou is famous for his longevity of 120 years, and because of this long life, he directly witnessed the development of Nan zong chan and the division of the five branches of Zushi chan, and furthermore, it can be said that he is deeply related to the formation of the chán thought. In particular, numerous Gongan (公案) related to Zhaozhou were organized in the later generations, and Kan hua chan(看話禪) of later generations put great importance on Zhaozhou's Gou zi wu fu xing(狗子無佛性).
In this thesis, Zhaozhou's life was summarized through Zhaozhōu Edicts(趙 州語錄) and various biographies, and furthermore, the chan thought appeared in Zhaozhou Edicts was examined. In this paper, the characteristics of chan thought shown in Zhaozhou Words are examined by examining the Pingchang xin shi dao(平常心是道), the theory of buddha-nature in 'Gou zi wu fu xing(狗子 無佛性)', Ben fen shi(本分事) andKou chun pi chan(口脣皮禪). Zhaozhou's 'Pingchang xin shi dao' and 'IJi xin ji fu', which are the reasons for enlightenment, are the characteristics of Mazu(馬祖)'s school of chán thought that were presented by Mazu and passed on to Nanquan(南泉), and Zhaozhou can be evaluated as inheriting the ideological vein. However, it can be evaluated that the interview methods such as 'Gou zi wu fu xing', 'Ben fen shi' and 'Kou chun pi chan' reveal Zhaozhou's own chan style well. The significance of Zhaozhou's chan thought can be found in that it provided an important ideological opportunity for the development of Wenzi chan(文字禪) and Kan hua chan(看話禪) centered on Gongan(公案) in later generations.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

조주종심(趙州從諗)은 육조 혜능의 남종선(南宗禪)을 계승하였으며, 이후 선종 오가(五家)의 조사선(祖師禪)이 발생하는 과도기에 활동하였다. 조주는 120세의 장수로 유명하고, 이러한긴 생애로 인하여 남종선의 발전과 조사선의 오가 분등(分燈)을 직접 목도하였고, 나아가그 선사상의 형성에 깊이 관련이 있다고 하겠다. 특히 후대에 조주와 관련된 수많은 공안(公案)이 정리되었으며, 후대의 간화선(看話禪)에서는 조주의 구자무불성(狗子無佛性)을 상당히 중시하고 있다.
본 논문에서는 『조주어록(趙州語錄)』과 여러 전기를 통하여 조주의 생애를 정리하고, 나아가 『조주어록』에 나타난 선사상을 고찰하였다. 본 논문에서는 『조주어록』에 보이는 선사상적 특질을 평상심시도(平常心是道), ‘구자무불성’의 불성론, 본분사(本分事)와 구순피선(口脣 皮禪)의 제접법(提接法) 등으로 설정하여 고찰하였다. 조주는 깨달음의 기연인 ‘평상심시도’ 와 ‘즉심즉불’은 바로 마조(馬祖)로부터 제시되어 남전(南泉)으로 전해진 마조계 선사상의특질로서 조주가 그 사상적 정맥을 계승하고 있다고 평가할 수 있다. 그러나 ‘구자무불성’과 ‘본분사’, ‘구순피선’ 등의 제접법은 조주의 독자적 선풍(禪風)을 잘 드러내고 있다고평가할 수 있다. 이러한 조주의 선사상은 후대에 공안을 중심으로 하는 문자선(文字禪)과간화선의 전개에 중요한 사상적 계기를 제공했다는 점에서 그 의의를 찾을 수 있다.
