In the early 20th century, some Korean artists emigrated abroad voluntarily or against his(her) will. Among them, Jung Yul-Seong is a representative musician who worked mainly in China and North Korea. Jung Yul-seong composed more than 360 songs during his 40 years of composing activities. Among them, such as songs with revolutionary and militant tendencies < The Great Chorus of Palrogun >, lyric lied < Yan’an Song >, < Yeonsooyo > which is a lyrical song with a folk song color, Opera < Mangbuwoon > which is based on a fairy tale, and so on.
In this paper, the author re-examined Jeong Yul-seong’s musical activities and the world of his work shown in his works, and studied his life with a focus on his evaluation.
The positive evaluation Jeong Yul-Seong receives is mainly related to music. First, Jeong Yul-seong’s works are vast and diverse. Jeong Yul-Seong composed music in various fields such as lied, solo, small chorus, large chorus, children’s song, labor songs, musicals, operas, film music, symphonies, and instrumental music etc. Among all the works of Jeong Yul-Seong, the most famous works are the songs with a militant and revolutionary character. Second, Jeong Yul-seong harmonized Western composition techniques with Eastern emotions, especially Chinese folk music and traditional music styles. As a result, his music has a unique personality. Third, he projected the keynote of ‘music is a reflection of the times and society’ in the composition.
However, unlike these positive evaluations, the morality is also receiving some negative evaluations, which are mainly related to the ideological inclinations he had. First, it is difficult to deny that the socialist ideology was the identity of him and was one of the sources that supported him. This tendency is reflected in some of his works. Second, while many works of anti-Japanese sentiment or Chinese ideological orientation are musicalized in Jeong Yul-Seong’s music, there are only a few songs that reflect Korean emotions. Third, there is a controversy related to his political activities. Jung Yul-seong made a lot of contributions to the regimes of China and North Korea, which are hostile countries of the Republic of Korea, but it is evaluated that he has contributed little to his own country, the Republic of Korea. But one side of the music needs to be seen as it is. Therefore, it is thought that it would be better to leave the evaluation to the researchers after more extensive and sufficient research is conducted.
