유진 벨과 남장로 선교사들의 초기 광주지역 방문전도와 잉계교회 = The Early Exploration Trip in Gwangju Area of Eugene Bell and The Southern Presbyterian Missionaries and Engge Church

In the early 1890s, Southern Presbyterian missionaries visited the Honam area, and in September 1895, Eugene Bell was selected as the pioneer of the Jeonnam mission at the annual meeting of the Southern Presbyterian Church. Since then, He carried out his work in the area steadily and enthusiastically. In particular, Eugene Bell and his co-workers’ visit to Gwangju and Naju in 1896 was “the greatest event in all this city[Gwangju]’s history.” It was the Engge Church that the fruit of the evangelism through the visit was. Missionary Eugene Bell said, “It is a source of deep gratitude to God that after seven years since the first efforts were made in this section the truth seems to be taking such good root.” And he visited Engge in 1899 and witnessed a prayer meeting being held.
The date of establishment of the Engge Church is not clear. However, based on the mission reports of Bell and other missionaries, it can be seen that Engge Church is the first church in Gwangju area. And according to a report by missionary Fredrica E. Straffer in 1904, the Engge Church grew enough to build a large chapel that could accommodate 200 people on its own. In addition, according to the records of Missionary Clement C. Owen, several people stood up and confessed their sins publicly at the Bible Class of the Engge Church.
However, in the reports of missionaries, it can be confirmed that the first church in Gwangju area is the Engge Church, but Usan-ri Church cannot be found. On the other hand, A History of The Presbyterian Church of Korea Vol. I. refers to Usan-ri Church as the first church and does not mention Engge Church at all. Today, it can also be confirmed on administrative maps or local visits that the Ingye area was Usan-ri or Usan-dong. Therefore, based on the records of the missionaries and considering that the two churches are located in the same area, it is natural to see Engge Church and Usan-ri Church as the same church.
