The monthly magazine “Ppurigipeun Namu(Deep Rooted Tree)”(March 1997 to August 1980) not only presented new milestones to Korean magazine history but also contributed greatly to preserving and inheriting traditional culture.
From the perspective of tradition and cultural property, this paper examined the traditional elements of “Ppurigipeun Namu” and the awareness of tradition of Han Chang Ki (1936~1997), the publisher. Han Chang Ki published “Ppurigipeun Namu” to rediscover, share and inherit the meaning and value of traditional culture. “Ppurigipeun Namu” deals with tradition and people’s content, but the ways of delivering it were modern and sophisticated. Until then, it was a new and unfamiliar way that Korea’s magazine and traditional cultural circles had never experienced. This method was notable in the horizontal writing for Hangeul(Korean language), cover design and the planning series of ‘People’s Heritage.’ This was the result of the agony of what is the essence of tradition and how to embrace and carry on tradition in our time.
Han Chang Ki recognized and practiced that traditional culture comes from everyday life based on Korean language and the sentiments of the people, that it is effective to accept it through sophisticated, visual forms and media in order for people of this era to enjoy and inherit the tradition, and that it must be modern and future-oriented. This was the traditional awareness of Han Chang Ki, and the monthly magazine “Ppurigipeun Namu” was the place of practice in which such awareness was expressed in detail.
Through the new and unfamiliar form of “Ppurigipeun Namu”, the public was able to expand their awareness of tradition and cultural heritage in greater depth. The traditional perception of Han Chang Ki and the practice of “Ppurigipeun Namu” are particularly meaningful in that it presented a new perspective on tradition, folklore and cultural properties.
