초등 1학년 대상 영어 공교육 대비 영어 문해성 준비도 평가 = Korean Year 1 Elementary Students’ English Literacy Readiness Assessment for Their Upcoming Public English Education

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study aims to assess elementary school Year 1 students’ English literacy readiness, focusing on vocabulary development. Korean children’s English literacy has been built up mainly through private education before the start of English public education. For this purpose, the researcher identifies two groups of Year 1 students - one with English kindergarten experience and the other without. To assess these subjects’ present English literacy level, the researcher collected the existing English textbooks, selected frequent vocabulary items and developed a series of test kits including the assessment of students’ prior knowledge and English decoding skills. Other than the subjects’ prior English education experience, influential factors of home literacy environment, SES, and residential area are also examined. It is found that in Korea’s L2 environment, prior experience of English exposure is the most critical to Year 1 students’ English literacy level. Further research is expected in relation with Korean literacy level and in terms of correlations of affecting factors.
