구한말 미국 선교사 베어드 부부의 선교현장과 한국어 교육연구 = The Baird Couple’s Mission Field and Their Korean Language Education during the Modern Transition Period

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

As Gale stated, the situation in Korea during the modern transition period was that “the old has disappeared, and the new has not yet arrived.” The emergence of Western missionaries during this period laid the foundations for new things to come, replacing the old in Korea. Most Western missionaries devoted themselves to the process of enlightenment and modernization in Korea and made learning Korean a priority for their missions, and were proactive about translating the texts produced within their own culture into Korean. Western missionaries played the role of “a window to introduce Korea to the world” and “a bridge that connects Korea to the world” through writing activities in Korea and lectures in the Anglo-American region. This research focuses on William M. Baird and his wife, Annie Baird. They acted as partners in documentary missions and in the Christian education ministry in the mission field in Korea during the turbulent transition to the modern era, “with the fullness of the Holy Spirit, unshakable, with emotional conviction and dedication to the Christian faith.” In particular, they were interested in Korean language learning because they believed that meeting with God takes precedence in the field of missions. The theme of “reformed life theology”— whether theology before God is a theory or a system of life—is reviewed in this retrospective and documentary of the Baird couple’s mission field. Thus, this study discovers the confession of this theology, which makes it the goal of all beings to glorify God.
