포스트코로나 문명 전환과 컴퓨터 역사학 = Post COVID-19 Period s Civilizational Turn and Computational History

국문 초록 (Abstract)

역사학의 유용성은 과거의 사례에 비추어 현재의 문제를 이해하고 해결 방안을 찾을 수 있는 지혜를 제공한다는 것에 근거한다. 하지만 기존 궤도에서 벗어나 새로운 길을 추구해야 하는 뉴노멀의 포스트코로나 시대에도 역사학이 그런 효과를 발휘할 수 있을까? 인류가 예전에 가보지 않았던 문명의 새로운 길을 가기 위해서는 과거를 범례로 하는 지도가 아니라 뉴노멀에 대처할 수 있는 내비게이션이 필요하다. 인간이 내비게이션에 의지해서 운전할 수 있게 된 것은 무엇보다도 인공지능을 진화시킨 덕분이다. 역사학에서 인공지능을 도구로 사용하는 길을 모색하는 새로운 모델이 컴퓨터 역사학(Computational History)이다. 컴퓨터 역사학은 역사적 상상력을 시뮬레이션 하는 것을 통해서, ‘지나간 미래’를 재인식할 뿐만 아니라 미래를 예측하는 것을 넘어 만드는 데 기여할 수 있다. 미래 인류 문명의 지속 가능성이 위기를 기회로 전환시킬 수 있느냐 없느냐에 달려 있다면, 역사학도 과거의 사실을 재현하는 것을 넘어 뉴노멀에 대비할 수 있는 시뮬레이션으로 연구 영역을 확장해야 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The usefulness of history is based on the fact that it provides the wisdom to understand current problems and find solutions in light of past examples. However, can history exert such an effect even in the post COVID-19 era of the “New normal”, when one has to pursue a new path away from the existing trajectory? In order to go on a new path of civilization that humanity has never been on, what is needed is a navigation system that can cope with the “New normal”, not a map of the past. It is thanks to the development of artificial intelligence that humans have been able to rely on an autonomous navigator to drive a car. Computational history is a new model that seeks to use artificial intelligence as a tool in history. Through simulating the imagined historical process, computational history contributes not only to re-recognition of the ‘past future’ but also to making the future beyond predicting it. If the sustainability of the post COVID-19 civilization depends on whether or not the crisis can be turned into opportunity, history should expand its research scope into simulations that can prepare for the “New normal” beyond representing past facts.
