루소의 사회계약 이론에 대한 역사적 독해

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

What did Rousseau have to say in his treatise on social contract? This article approaches this question by focusing on the eighteenth-century intellectuals’ predicaments and re-reading the Social Contract. Four points of interpretation therefrom arises: 1) The Western civilization, weakened by the effeminate effects of commerce, will fall due to internal corruption and the invasion from the East. 2) It is nearly impossible for men to live freely in society, whatever the form of government: be it monarchy, aristocracy, or democracy. 3) The extremely dim prospect of such a free society is found in small agricultural states where the people have never been exposed to corrupt laws and the land is distributed more or less equally. 4) Such societies, however, would easily fall prey to the military conquest of stronger states driven by commerce. Therefore, as regards the prospect of liberty in reality according to Rousseau, despair awaited humanity. The interpretation of Rousseau’s political thought proposed in this article has the merit of avoiding anachronistic presentism and reaching a conclusion faithful to the historical context.
