Kim, Yung-Su is a Playwright who produced a lot of Plays and Radio, T.V dramas from middle 1930 until early 1970. There are only a little studies about him but so far have transfered eight plays and T.V drama from playbook <Hyul Maek). First of all. This paper deals with (Hyul Maek) which can be consider representative of Kim, Young Su and analyzes space in〈Hyul Maek). Henthforth we would like to establish the meaning of it and his place in the history of Play.
The stage-space of〈Hyul Maek) is around Sungbukdong Seoul, a mountain district. There is a air-raid shelter digged in Japan imperialism, where one can escape from bombing. In front of air-raid shelter a site was made. There are wire nettings beyond air-raid shelter and site. In that place we can see high building in downtown beyond wire netting.
Time: about 1947 early summer.
Many characters, Taulboo old man, Guabook, Kangtong old man, Okkmae, Boksun, Wonpal, Wonchil, Mother, Han woman, Machmaking oldman, Baek okhye, Chunggin girl, Kang man, Gabdyug, Policeman and so on, are acting and go on a play. They have not only their special space but also ideal language.
They conflicted with themselves and others during living in uneasily Sungbokdong mountain district and under confusing 1947. Among them space will be at issue. Among old generations who are Taulboo old man, Kangtong old man, Okkmae, Mother, Machmaking oldman, Chunggin girl, Kang man, were not agreed to the concept of space between real and ideal space. Taulboo old man wants to acquire mountain air-raid shelter and is willing to go to lower site. He thought American army unit as method with which he is able to realize his vision. Kangtong old man transformed mountain district into reproduction space. His ideal space is 'much wider world’. The stage is the space of distressed death for mother. So she has jump Jodahn river or 'Heaven as a ideal. Here is a space of practicing in Okkmae. She struggles for a lower space through money served from the entertainment section by practicing.
Machmaking old man changed this to a space of negotiation and provides vitality. Middle generation, Wonpal, Wonchil, Baek okhye are eager to have different space as above generations. Wonpal is a man who jumped over boundary from Northkorea to Southkorea. He lost his native place and thought of defence of mountain air-raid shelter. Also he emphasizes that he must hard work for it without regarding to weight or light of work. But his brother Wonchil has denied real space. He claims to pursue the space in which people are able to independence hurrah alltogather and leads all people from mountain district to new space. The Ideological and ethical space in Wonchil not only conflicted with his elder brother but also differed from space of Baek okhye. Baek okhye became a dancing girl from clerk of powdered restaurant. She took pride in dancer.
In this play there are the most young generations, Guabook, Boksun, Gabdyug. Guabook and Boksun, are peddler and live in mountain district.
Gabdyug live in other place and does a barber here. It is a liberal space that they have an agreement whether they reside in mountain or in other's and do barber here or not. They have more sound ideal space than above two generations. Guabook and Boksun regard Yungdungpo factory as ideal space and Gabdyug wants to have barbershop which had a licence.
(Hyul Maek) has been played through deepening confliction between Taulboo oldman and his son Guabook, Okkmae and Boksun, Wonpal and Wonchil. Kang man makes a charge for mountain district which became a site of life. Mother suggests jump Jodahn river. So she makes herself to rejoicing. The winner of such a conflict of space are Guabook, Boksun, Gabdyug and Wonpal.
The playwright explains that when the sound of Gykung became higher and higher, an act will be slowly curtain off and when the sound of Gykung got higher in order to build new house, the play ends. Mountain district, three air-raid shelter and site are socio-historic spaces of the period of this play written. Namely, that is a Korean society’s bird’s-eye view since 1947. Those who are old generation and sicked want American army unit, dance-hall, bar-girl, pineapple and young generations who are filled with ideology are proposed to idealistic space. These have socio-historicity snce 1945, for these are degenerated culture introduced by U.S army and it makes Korean value degenerate.
If we regard (a) as winner s space, (b) as defeatist space, and (b) is suitable to old and sicked men or in spite of young dependent men, while (a) is independent men from America or reproducer who makes something through Kangtong which was products of western civilization.
The playwright Kim Yung-Su stands in side (a). He indicated that the reconstruction of Korea depends on young people and their honest labour in confusion of liberation.
