『뉴로맨서』에 나타난 포스트휴먼 스케이프: 사이보그와 인공지능의 상호작용을 중심으로 = Posthumanscape in Neuromancer: Interaction Between Cyborgs and Artificial Intelligences

국문 초록 (Abstract)

윌리엄 깁슨의 『뉴로맨서』는 인공지능, 사이보그, 로봇과 같은 소위 포스트휴먼 주체들이 가득한 미래 세계를 잘 보여주고 있다. 존재론적인 측면에서 작품에 등장하는 인간, 사이보그와 인공지능이 완전히 다르다고 할 수 없다. 그들은 사회의 구성원으로서 서로 상호작용을 할 수밖에 없다. 그 가운데 가족기업 테시에-애쉬풀사의 두 인공지능, 윈터뮤트와 뉴로맨서가 사회 구성체 형성에 있어서 강력한 역할을 담당한다. 윈터뮤트는 벌집마음을 가진 의사결정자로 외부세계의 변화에 큰 영향을 미치고 있고, 반면 뉴로맨서는 감성적인 인격체로서의 인공지능으로 기능한다. 마리-프랑스는 어떤 환경에서도 윈터뮤트가 뉴로맨서와 결합하여 서로 상보적 균형적 관계를 이룰 수 있도록 프로그램화하여 놓았다. 하지만 남편 애쉬풀은 기업 이윤의 극대화를 위해 숫자와 통계 기반의 목표지향이고 비윤리적인 윈터뮤트와 시적 감성을 추구하는 뉴로맨서를 분리시키고, 부인 마리-프랑스를 목 졸라 죽인다. 애쉬풀은 조화와 균형을 이루는 공생의 삶을 포기하고 자신과 기업을 외부세계와 단절시킴으로써 조화와 균형이 상실된 삶을 영위하다가 결국 딸 제인3에게 죽임을 당한다. 그 가운데 궁극적으로 윈터뮤트와 뉴로맨서를 하나로 결합시키려한 마리-프랑스의 꿈이 이루진다. 결과적으로 포스트휴먼 주체들 사이의 갈등이 해소되고 균형과 조화가 회복된 사회의 비전이 제시된다. 이처럼 이 소설은 포스트휴먼 주체들의 바람직한 상호작용과 포스트휴먼 시대에 필요한 윤리의식을 제시하고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

William Gibson’s Neuromancer shows the future world full of so-called posthumans like artificial Intelligences, cyborgs and robots. In fact, we cannot say that A.I. is completely different from cyborg and robot in their ontological status. They also have to interact with each other as a full member of society and perform in their own to achieve their goals. Among them, two artificial intelligences, Wintermute and Neuromancer, play the most powerful roles in constructing the future world. Wintermute is “hive mind, decision maker, effecting change in the world outside.” On the other hand, Neuromancer is personality and immortality. “Marie-France must have built something into Wintermute, the compulsion that had driven the thing to free itself, to unite with Neuromancer” to pursue their complementary and balanced relationship. However, Ashpool did not agree with her, but strangled her to death, so her idea was ignored and the family community was isolated and disconnected from the outside to the final destruction. To maximize the benefits, Tessier-Ashpool corporation chose the separation between the Wintermute to pursue only the targeted goal and the Neuromancer to make the community warm-hearted. Nevertheless, as originally planned, Marie-France’s dream was achieved to make them one, so the intense anxiety in the posthuman relationship seems to be released while the potential to become a harmonious society seems to increase. As a whole, this novel suggests the necessary ethics as well as the desirable interaction among the posthumans in the posthuman era.
