Ungye Jo Jungmuk(雲溪 趙重默, 1820 ~ ?) is an artist from painting bureau during the late Chosun dynasty. He demonstrated landscape painting that combined late Qing’s painting skills and Chosun’s traditional drawing style. This study analyzes Jo’s drawing characteristics by comparing imaginary landscape paintings and nature landscape paintings. Jo’s landscape paintings take up most of Chosun’s plant paintings, with the feature of a long canvas. This sort of design represented late 19th century’s drawing trend. Jo’s nature landscape painting is called Hamheungbongungdo, a drawing inspired from Hamheungbongun, which translates into Hamheungbon Palace. In this painting he indicated his full name and royalty rank, when he served at the military. On the other hand, his imaginary landscape paintings can be divided into teenage years and elderly years. His teen artwork named Churimdokjo-do was influenced by Chusa JeongHee Kim, containing a literary artist mood. On the other hand, his elderly work Ohsonggang-do is interesting in that it has accepted Qing’s painting style along with traditional southern Chosun style. In addition, this research has examined Hamgyeonnamdo-shilgyeondobyeongpung, which was made between the late 19th century and early 20th century and Jo’s landscape paintings. By pointing out the similarities, this study has found evidence that Jo’s style was being taught to Chosun district painters. Cho’s landsacpe painting is very significant since it highly represents 19th century artworks, which was a period of mingling 18th century realism and JeongHee Kim trend with Qing’s artistic influence. As Jo’s paintings were introduced to the Western world art and its style continued until 20th century. Jo has succeeded to overcome the limits of transition art and led Korean art into a bigger world while preserving the traditional methods.
