이옥(李鈺) 소품문(小品文)에 나타난 한양(漢陽) 도회민(都會民)의 생활(生活)과 세태(世態) = Lives of City Dwellers and Social Conditions in Hanyang Based on Yi Ok's Short Prose

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 李鈺의 小品文에서 漢陽 都會民의 생활과 인정세태가 표현되는 양상을 분석하였다. 이옥은 소재와 주제, 문체 등에서 참신한 변화를 추구하였는데, 그 변화의 한 측면이 바로 한양이란 도회지의 탐구였다. 전통적으로 도회지 풍경은 非文學的으로 받아들여졌고, 한양은 수도방위 차원에서 묘사의 금기가 적용되어 창작의 적극적 대상이 되지 못했다. 반면에 이옥은 문학 소재의 대부분을 한양과 도회민의 묘사에 집중하였다.
이옥이 포착한 한양은 행정도시로서 한양이 아니라 상업과 소비도시로서 한양이었다. 한양을 신분과 윤리가 아닌 이익에 따라 움직이고, 수많은 여항인이 생존을 위해 몸부림치는 세계, 다양한 상품이 소비되는 시장으로 묘사하였다. 그렇게 귀족이 아닌 서민의 생활과 욕망을 중심으로 생동하게 묘사함으로써 참신하고도 특별한 문학의 영역을 개척하였다.
한양 토박이로서 이옥은 도회민의 감성과 시각을 소유하여 한양을 묘사하였다. 일반 문인들과는 달리 상업화되고 향락과 소비가 꿈틀거리는 세속적 풍경을 비판적 시각으로 재단하지 않았다. 이옥은 18세기 중반 이후 소비도시로 번성한 한양을 본격적으로 산문에 담아낸 작가로 높이 평가할 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study analyzed the lives of city dwellers and social conditions in Hanyang based on descriptions in short compositions literatur written by Yi Ok. The writer adopted a fresh approach in terms of subject matter, theme and writing style, and among his novel attempts was the exploration of the city Hanyang. Traditionally, urban scenes have been regarded as non-literary, and writers faced many restrictions when describing Hanyang as such writings were considered a threat to national security. Yi Ok stood out among other writers by focusing on Hanyang and urban dwellers.
Hanyang, as viewed by Yi Ok, was not an administrative city, but a city of commerce and consumption. He described the city as a market driven by profit, rather than social status or ethics. He looked at how commoners struggled to make a living, and pioneered a new kind of literature with his realistic depictions of middleclass desires and way of life.
As one born and bred in Hanyang, Yi Ok viewed the city in the eyes of a native and resonated a sense of community. Unlike other writers, he was not critical of secular practices such as commercialization and indulgent consumption. Yi Ok is highly reputed for writing short prose pieces on Hanyang and portraying how it thrived as a city of consumption in the mid-18th century.
