We undertake Hanmun studies (Studies on Classics written in Classical Chinese, 漢文學) research and education because, within the data of the past left to us via Hanmun (漢文) records, we can discover meaningful truths and relationships between our culture’s past and present, and through this, gain insight that allows us to diachronically see into our cultural world. Through this paper, the author seeks a new method for the education and research of Hanmun studies for the 'digital age,' i.e. the knowledge society of the 21st century.
The first task to adapt Hanmun studies for the digital environment is to create a collaboration system through which a great number of researchers can communicate with one another and familiarize students - the researchers of the future - with this new system through education. In this paper, the author introduces multiple examples of digital-based research environments for Hanmun studies and their educational utilization and suggests implementing them more broadly in Hanmun studies research and education.
In a digital environment, the emphasis of Hanmun studies education is placed not only on the analysis of Hanmun text via analog language but also in the cultivation of the ability to express the analysis process and results via digital data. If students trained in such an education course advance to become expert researchers, they will follow their individual interests in disciplines such as literature, history, philosophy, etc. to produce diverse research and education results that will naturally become data, thus allowing such results to be shared and brought together in the digital world. If this is realized, the world of old documents we are investigating under the name of Hanmun studies will no longer be fragmented into its constituent parts but will be shown to us as a comprehensive, full picture. And by extension, we can understand how the various elements of contemporary society are deeply rooted in the world of classical Hanmun texts.
