In 1950s, the Korean modem drama was revived through activities of theatrical company Shinhyup which started as a theatrical company attached to Korean National Theater from 1950. Shinhyup, working before 1961 when the base of human and material were combined into Korean National Theater, was major Korean modem theater company. The masterpiece of Shinhyup were : (1) played in 1950, Seoul, Wonsulrang (written by Ryu Chi-jin), Thunderstorm(written by Chinese writer Cho Woo), (2) played in 1951~1952, Daegu, Hamlet, Othello, Macbeth(written by Shakespeare), (3) played in 1955~1957, Seoul, A Streetcar Named Desire (written by Tennessee Williams), Desire under the elms(written by Eugene O'Neill), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof(written by Tennessee Williams), Death of a Salesman(written by Arthur Miller). Stage of Shinhyup showed outstanding result in translated dramas rather than Korean original dramas and did major role in 1950s.
At that time, the main subject was shifted to Lee Hae-rang and Kim Dong-won of Shinhyup from Ryu Chi-jin of Kugyun. Although Ryu Chi-jin was the representative Korean modem drama writer in colonial period, his symbolic position was shrank after Liberation in 1945 for the activity of 'National Theater', controlled by Japan, in last years of colonial period. But Lee Hae-rang and Kim Dong-won didn't participate to National Theater in that time, so they were free from the blame of pro-Japanese after Liberation and got the representative position of 'Racial Theater' and genuineness of legitimate Korean modern drama movement. As Korean original dramas were withdrawn to anti-socialism dramas and historical dramas in 1950s, Shinhyup accomplished the mature of Korean theater through the playing translated dramas of world classic masterpiece. The typical repertory of Shinhyup, Shakespeare dramas and American modem dramas, showed the world image of newly organized by USA in 1950s and the new fantasy of Korean peoples who wanted to clean up the memories of the colony and Korean War.
