This study looks into the handing down and utilization of the Wonjong -Munryu in the 11~12th century East Asia. In Song the Wonjong-Munryu was handed down after 1087 and the utilization of the Wonjong-Munryu can be found in Shihui’s(師會) Huayan yisheng jiaoyi fenqizhang fuguji(華嚴一乘敎義分 齊章復古記).The. exchange of the Wonjong-Munryu is stated in the Daegakgusa-munjip(大覺國師文集). The exchange mostly occurred through Song trader(宋商). The Wonjong-Munryu contributed to the development and growth of Buddhism in Song and was utilized by Jingyuan(淨源) and his successors, Shihui, Shanxi(善熹) and others.
The Wonjong-Munryu was first recorded in Japan in Toiki dento mokuroku (東域傳燈目錄) in 1094. Indeed, its name was cited in many books published in Japan up until the 18thcentury, though mostly in the 13th and 14th centuries. Importan tmaterials citing the name of the book were associated with Avatamsaksa Sutra and Acvaghosha's discourse on the awakening of faith in the Mahayana. The tendency to cite the said book is viewed as an attempt to make up for materials that were not passed onto Japan based on wiliness for acceptance.
From the perspective of the history of exchange, exchanges between East Asia countries - Goryeo, Song, Japan, and Liao遼 - were largely focused on economy and culture. The countries engaged in mutual exchanges of information concerning the publication of the Buddhist Commentaries. For instance, the monk Uicheon once asked Japan for its information on the Buddhist Commentaries, while Japan secured Buddhist literary works based on the information concerning the Buddhist Commentaries published by the Gyojangdogam. It is significant that such exchanges of information on the Buddhist Commentaries served to complement the political and economic exchanges carried out between East Asia countries.
