This study explored the influence of adolescent’s perceived parentification and overprotectivenss on their interpersonal problems. In particular, adolescent’s emotional regulation style was assumed to mediate the influence of the parentification and overprotectivenss on their interpersonal problems. A survey was conducted for 504 students in the five middle and high schools. A series of multiple regression was conducted to identify the effects of parentification, overprotectiveness, emotional regulation style on interpersonal problem. The results of the study can be summarized as follows. First, it was found that avoidant-distractive emotional regulation style, overprotectiveness, and parentification had significant influences on interpersonal relationships in the listed order. Second, avoidant-distractive emotional regulation style partially mediated the relations between parentification and interpersonal problem. Finally, in terms of the relations between overprotective and interpersonal problem, avoidant-distractive emotional regulation style had mediating effects. Based on the findings above, the study suggests that counseling intervention should be required for adolescents in terms of regulating their emotions and dealing with problems.
