개신교 영성훈련의 현재와 전망 = 관계적·통전적 경험의 내면화를 지향하며

국문 초록 (Abstract)

현대에서 ‘영성’은 다양한 관계를 포괄하는 통전적 인간 경험에 적용되는 용어로 이해되고 있다. 궁극적 가치를 추구하며 삶을 통합해 가는 경험이 영성 탐구와 실천의 목적이 된다. 현대 기독교 영성의 관심은 인간의 지성이나 내면 활동만이 아니라, 지성과 감성의 조화, 내적 생활과 외적 생활의 균형, 개인의 신앙생활과 공동체적 책임의 조화, 사회적 존재로서의 삶 등 관계적이고 통합적인 인간 경험으로 확장되어야 한다.
본 논문은 관계적이고 통전적인 인간이해의 관점에서 개신교 영성훈련의 현재와 전망에 대한 논의를 담고 있다. 인간은 관계적이며 사회적 존재이고, 모든 관계의 토대는 하나님과의 관계이다. 따라서 본 논문의 목적은 관계적 · 통전적 인간 경험에 관심을 두고 있는 현대 기독교 영성 이해를 개괄하면서, 이런 경험들이 하나님과의 관계성 속에서 ‘내면화’되어 그리스도인으로서의 ‘삶의 형태’(the shape of living)를 형성하도록 돕는 영성훈련에 대해 살펴보는 것이다. 특히 개신교적 관점에서 영성훈련을 제안함으로써, 일상의 삶과 밀착된 영성훈련이 그리스도인들의 삶의 형태를 만들어 갈 수 있다는 것을 살펴보았다.
본 논문은 연구자가 스코틀랜드 영성센터에서 경험한 내용들과 사람들과의 면담으로부터 얻은 통찰로부터 시작되었다. 스코틀랜드 장로교인들과 만남은 개신교 영성훈련의 필요성과 현재의 상황, 방향성에 대해 많은 시사점을 주었다. 영성은 인간의 내적 경험뿐 아니라 통합적 경험, 사회적 존재로서의 관계적 경험을 포함해야 한다. 영성훈련은 이 모든 경험들을 하나님과의 관계성 안에서 이해하고 해석하는 ‘내면화’ 과정으로, 그리스도인으로서의 삶의 형태를 형성하도록 돕는 과정이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In the Modern era, ‘spirituality’ is understood to be a term which applies to wholistic human experiences that include a variety of relationships. The purpose of searching for and practicing spirituality is to pursue the ultimate value and to integrate one’s life experiences. The concern of modern Christian spirituality does not focus on only human intelligence and internal activities. Rather, the concern expands to relational and wholistic human experiences that include the harmonization of human intelligence and emotion, balance of internal life and external life, harmonization of individual faith and communal responsibility, and life as a social being, etc.
This paper deals with present and prospective Protestant spiritual exercises from the perspective of relational and wholistic human understanding. A human is a relational and wholistic being, and the foundation of all relations is the relation with God. Therefore, the purpose of this paper follows. Firstly, it recapitulates the theories of modern Christian spirituality concerned with relational and wholistic human experiences. Secondly, it examines spiritual exercises which help those relational and wholistic human experiences internalize in relation with God, thereby forming ‘the shape of living’ as a Christian. As suggesting spiritual exercises from a Protestant perspective, this paper examines the spiritual exercises at the heart of one’s daily life that forms the shape of living for Christians.
This paper began with insights gained from experiences in the centers for spirituality in Scotland and interviews with Scottish Presbyterians. These conversations helped me understand the necessity for Presbyterian spiritual exercise, its current situation, and its direction. Spirituality should include not only human inner experiences, but also human wholistic experiences and relational experiences as social beings. Spiritual exercise is a process for ‘internalization’ to understand and interpret these experiences in relation with God, as well as to help form the shape of living as a Christian.
