From Choosing to Being Chosen: Spiritual Formation for Life Vocation of College Students

This research made elaboration to present in which the self‐identity issues and life vocation could be featured as prominent for college students, and spiritual practices with spiritual direction could assist them to seek for life turning points through spiritual experiences. This study has questioned that current religious education has capability to guide college students into authentic engagement with life vocation by integrating various aspects of life, which is critical to discover the life vocation. The contemplative prayer method of election from Ignatius’ Spiritual Exercises is facilitated as constitutive spiritual practice to lead college student into contemplative prayer for life vocation. The Examen prayer, daily Bible reading and spiritual journaling are proposed as prerequisites not only in cultivating the inner movements, but also in discerning the wills of God and the movements of spirits.
The actual account of spiritual care with a college student has demonstrated how the proposed spiritual practices with spiritual direction could nurture a soul to establish a Christian identity as well as to discover the life vocation by discerning the wills of God. Critical to reconstruct one’s understanding of the vocation has been taking place “from choosing to be chosen.” In effect, it demonstrated the way in which the chaplain service equipped with spiritual direction and practices could cultivate its college ministry in Korean context.
